This morning at 3am, our last living foundress reached the end of her earthly journey with us. She lived a long and fruitful monastic life of 68 years and was an inspiration to all of us.
One word of wisdom which Sr Carol held close to her heart, and would share with anyone who asked, was from St Therese:
“If you are willing to bear in peace the trial of not being pleased with yourself, you will be offering the Lord Jesus a home in your heart. It is true you will suffer, for you will feel like a stranger in your own house. But do not fear, for the poorer you are, the more Christ will love you.”
Originaly from Canada, Sr Carol was the first North American to enter St Mary's Abbey in Glencairn - the community which founded Mount Saint Mary's Abbey. She is pictured below with her fellow Irish and American foundresses in 1949, and then with her fellow American foundresses on a visit to Glencairn in 1998.
